Agricultural tractor hydraulics: which seals you need and how to maintain them

On tractors, hydraulics work in dust, mud, cold and intense seasons. Here is where the most stressed seals are and how to avoid downtime at the worst moment.

Agricultural tractor hydraulics: which seals you need and how to maintain them

A modern tractor is a small hydraulic power station on wheels. Rear linkage, front loader, steering, brakes, control valves and connected implements all work thanks to pressurised oil. And where there is pressurised oil, there are seals: dozens, often hundreds. In agriculture these seals work in particularly harsh conditions, and a failure at the height of the season can be costly.

Working conditions in agriculture

  • Dust and mud: cylinder rods exposed to soil, straw and moisture.
  • Temperature swings: cold starts in winter and long hot days in summer.
  • Seasonal use: periods of very intensive work alternating with months of inactivity.
  • Irregular loads: shocks, jolts and side loads, especially when working with the front loader.
  • Different implements: machines fitted with cylinders from different manufacturers, often of different ages.

Where the seals are

Linkage and top-link cylinders

They work with high loads and must hold the implement in position. Internal leakage shows when the implement slowly drops even with the control lever still.

Front loader

Boom and bucket cylinders are among the most exposed: long rods, dirt, shocks and side loads. Here the wiper and guide rings are decisive for seal life.

Hydraulic steering

The steering cylinder works continuously and close to the ground. A leak not only makes a mess but also reduces steering precision.

Connected implements

Tipping trailers, reversible ploughs, folding harrows, balers and mowers often have their own cylinders. They are the components that most often stand idle for months and show leaks when work resumes.

Rotating parts

PTOs, gearboxes and hubs use oil seals and rotary shaft seals, which protect the gears and retain the lubricant.

Which seals to choose

  • Rod seals in polyurethane or with anti-extrusion elements, to withstand pressure peaks.
  • Robust wipers, preferably double lip or metal-cased on the most exposed cylinders.
  • Compact piston seals, tolerant to dirt and easy to fit.
  • Guide rings in resin or polyester to carry side loads.
  • O-rings in NBR for fittings and static seals, in FKM at the hottest points.

Preparing for the season

  1. Inspect before starting: check rods, leaks and movement of all cylinders, including those on implements.
  2. Clean and protect rods during downtime: a rod exposed to moisture can rust and ruin the seals when work starts again.
  3. Park with rods retracted whenever possible.
  4. Check oil and filters: oil contaminated with water or dust shortens the life of the whole system.
  5. Prepare a spare kit for the most critical cylinders, so you can repair immediately without waiting in the middle of the season.

How to identify spare parts

On tractors and implements with many years of work, it is often impossible to trace the original codes. In these cases, simply dismantle the cylinder, measure rod, tube and grooves and use the search by dimensions on our website. Many profiles used in agriculture are in stock, ready for fast shipping. If in doubt, send us dimensions and photos: we will help you find the right solution.

Frequently asked questions

Are agricultural cylinder seals different from industrial ones?

The profiles are often the same, but in agriculture it pays to favour robust wipers, abrasion-resistant materials and guides suited to side loads.

What should I check before restarting an implement idle for months?

Clean the rods, check the chrome for rust, inspect the hoses and run a few no-load cycles at low speed before working under load.

Can I order kits for several cylinders at once?

Of course: add all the seals you need to the cart. A single order means fewer shipments and shorter waiting times.
